There was a welcome surprise visitor to the Junior Club on Saturday 30th September'17.
Former Basingstoke Chess Club player Carl Gorka attended the club and helped with the teaching of the youngsters.
Carl started his chess at the former Brighton Hill Chess Club and helped the teams to some success in the Basingstoke and Berkshire League's. He also competed well in the Junior events at the time before joining Basingstoke Chess Club.
Carl emigrated to Australia and is a qualified chess coach. In addition to passing on many tips during the morning Carl took part in a blitz competition for the adults and finished second behind Mo Negargar.  Carl is due to return home to Australia soon and we wish him well.
