Basingstoke
Chess Club members are thrilled to bits this week and extremely proud of their
juniors. At the Delancey Giga-Finals held in Reading two players associated
with the Junior Club won the Ultimo title with style.
The
competition brings together the best chess youngsters from the Southern half of
the country who have won through from the Mega-finals.
Daniel Yu
who attends Daneshill School won the under 10 title with a perfect score of
6/6. Daniel adds this title to the West of England Championship success as well
as the Basingstoke Junior Chess Championship which he won recently. Coaching at
the school is provided by Grand-master Nick Pert who must take enormous credit
for producing so many talented players. Over the past few seasons Daniel has munched his
way through the junior rank players. Now having made his debut in the Basingstoke
Chess Club adult team he is now munching his way through the adult section with
wins.
Not to be
outdone Daniel Shek won the under 8 Ultimo title and again with the perfect
score of 6/6. Daniel competes in many
Junior Congress’s around the region and with considerable success. Like Daniel
Yu he was a winner of the West of England Championships. Daniel Shek attends
Yately Manor School and is also a member of the Frimley Junior Chess Club. Here
he gets expert tuition from coaches John Upham and Ken Coates.
As well as
the two Daniel’s Basingstoke Junior Chess Club are producing a considerable
number of very talented boys and girls at the game who seem to improve rapidly.
The
Discovery Centre/Library will be the venue for a Chess morning on Monday 31st
July’17. The start time is 10.00am and continues until 1.00pm. All are welcome.
Due to
increasing membership Basingstoke Chess Club are entering an extra team into
the Southampton Chess League for the forthcoming season. New members are always
welcome to the Bridge and Chess club in Sherborne Road.
